HOW TO WRITE ABOUT YOUR NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE

1. Clarify Your Purpose

Ask yourself:

  • Why do I want to share this?
  • Is it for healing, helping others, spiritual reflection, or storytelling? Your purpose will shape the tone and structure of your writing.

2. Start with the Moment

Begin with the experience itself. Describe:

  • Where you were and what was happening
  • What led up to it (accident, illness, trauma, etc.)
  • The critical moment—what made it “near death”?

Use sensory details: sights, sounds, physical sensations, and emotions. Was time distorted? Did you feel peace, fear, detachment?

3. Explore the Unexplainable

Many NDEs involve surreal or spiritual elements:

  • Did you feel like you left your body?
  • Did you see light, beings, or hear voices?
  • Did you experience a life review or overwhelming love?

It’s okay to describe things you don’t fully understand. Use metaphors or comparisons if needed.

4. Reflect on the Aftermath

Share how the experience changed you:

  • Did your beliefs shift?
  • Did you feel more connected to life, others, or a higher power?
  • Did you struggle with fear, confusion, or gratitude afterward?

This is often the most powerful part—how you grew, healed, or wrestled with meaning.

5. Choose Your Format

You can write it as:

  • A personal essay (first-person, reflective)
  • A memoir chapter (narrative-driven)
  • A letter to your past/future self
  • A poem or spoken word piece
  • A fictionalized version if you want emotional distance

6. Be Honest, Not Perfect

You don’t need to have all the answers. Vulnerability is powerful. Let your voice be raw, real, and human.
